How UK study is structured

Three routes into a UK degree, and the difference between the college that teaches you and the university that awards the degree.

Pathway colleges and study centres often teach on the university's own campus.

A pathway college or study centre is not the university itself. Each profile on this site states who delivers the programme and which university awards the final degree.

  1. 01

    Foundation & pathway routes

International Year Zero (IY0) and foundation programmes prepare you for year one of a degree. International Year One (IY1) and Stage One/Two routes let you start a degree in a supported first year, often delivered by a pathway college or study centre on the university campus.

  2. 02

    Undergraduate (Bachelor's)

Usually three years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and four years in Scotland. Many courses offer an optional placement year.

  3. 03

    Postgraduate taught (Master's)

Most taught Master's degrees (MSc, MA, MBA) take one year full time. Some include a placement or professional practice year, and pre-Master's routes (IIM) exist for students who need extra preparation.

Admissions

Application, offer, CAS and visa

The order is the same for almost every institution. NepliFly's role starts at step one — an enquiry is not an application.

  1. 01

    Choose institutions and courses

Shortlist options that match your grades, English level, budget and intake.

  2. 02

    Application

Your application goes to the institution with transcripts, English evidence and a personal statement.

  3. 03

    Offer

The institution issues a conditional or unconditional offer. Conditions might include grades or an English test.

  4. 04

    Deposit & CAS

After meeting the conditions and paying any deposit, the university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).

  5. 05

    Student visa

You apply for the UK Student visa using your CAS, showing the required funds and English level.

  6. 06

    Travel & enrolment

Arrange accommodation, travel before your course start date and enrol at the university.

Costs

Tuition and living costs

Across the routes currently listed on NepliFly, published first-year tuition ranges from about £11,250 to £21,000 per year before or after scholarships, depending on the institution and route. Fees are set per academic year in pounds sterling (GBP).

You will also need money for living costs. For a Student visa you must usually show a set amount per month for up to nine months, which is higher in London than elsewhere. The current figures are published on GOV.UK.

English & intakes

English tests and start dates

English tests

Most institutions accept IELTS (UKVI or Academic), PTE and often Duolingo or Oxford tests. Pathway routes commonly ask for around IELTS 5.5; direct degrees around 6.0–6.5. Some institutions accept a waiver based on your Grade 12 English grade or a medium-of-instruction letter.

Intakes and start dates

The main UK intake is September, with January as the second. Some institutions add February, March, May or November starts.
